National Renewable Energy Platform

The Productive Use of Energy (PURE) focuses on harnessing renewable energy to enhance economic activities and improve livelihoods in Uganda. By integrating renewable energy solutions into key sectors such as agriculture, agro-processing, irrigation, and small businesses, PURE fosters sustainable development, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and contributes to poverty reduction.

NREP’s Role in PURE

Driving Change in the Energy Landscape

NREP plays a central role in advancing PURE initiatives by coordinating stakeholders, fostering partnerships, and creating an enabling environment for innovative energy solutions. Its efforts align with Uganda’s energy and climate policies to address challenges in access, awareness, and infrastructure.

Policies Supporting PURE in Uganda

Uganda’s enabling policy environment supports the integration of PURE into development strategies. Key policies include

  • Energy Policy 2023 Promotes on-grid and off-grid PURE applications like e-mobility, e-cooking, and irrigation.
  • National Electrification Strategy 2023 Advocates for sustainable off-grid energy access.
  • Green Manufacturing Strategy 2021-2025 Encourages the use of renewable energy in agro-processing and clean cooking solutions.
  • Third Agricultural Strategic Plan (ASSP-III) 2018 Focuses on agricultural value addition through renewable energy.
