Mini-Grids

Purpose

The purpose of the Subcommittee on Mini-grids within the Off-Grid Energy Working Group (OGEWG) is to drive discussions and initiatives pertaining to the pivotal area of minigrids. Its primary objective is to assess and address the various challenges and opportunities associated with the deployment and operation of minigrid systems and DREs in off-grid energy contexts. This includes examining regulatory frameworks, site identification/allocations, financing mechanisms, technological innovations, operational models, tariff models and community engagement strategies relevant to minigrids.

Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Technical Standards Development:
    • Develop and promote technical standards and best practices for minigrid deployment and operation.
  2. Regulatory Framework Enhancement:
    • Work with regulatory authorities to improve the policy and regulatory environment for minigrids.
  3. Site Identification:
    • Support the identification and assessment of viable sites for minigrid development across Uganda.
  4. Tariff Model Innovation:
    • Explore and recommend sustainable tariff models that balance affordability with financial viability.
  5. Community Engagement:
    • Develop frameworks for effective community engagement and ownership in minigrid projects.
