The OGEWG was established with significant support from the Beyond the Grid Fund for Africa (BGFA). BGFA played a crucial role in the process, collaborating with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) and the National Renewable Energy Platform (NREP) to convene key stakeholders within the off-grid sector. This collaborative effort led to the establishment of an official Off-Grid Energy Working Group in Uganda, aimed at enhancing coordination and oversight of initiatives designed to raise the profile of the off-grid energy sub-sector.
The OGEWG operates through a three-tiered structure to effectively address the challenges in the off-grid energy sector.
The OGEWG Forum comprises the larger group of key, primary, and some secondary stakeholders. The Forum meets to share the goals, scope, and outcomes of interventions of stakeholders in the off-grid energy sub-sector and explore opportunities for collaboration. The Forum also identifies and discusses barriers and challenges to the growth of the off-grid energy market, including issues related to increased private investment, and makes recommendations to the Steering Committee for follow-up actions.
The OGEWG has five specialized subcommittees that focus on addressing critical thematic issues identified as barriers to investment in the off-grid energy sector. Each subcommittee brings together relevant stakeholders to develop strategies and recommendations in their specific focus areas. The main objective and output of the subcommittees' work is to consider challenges and issues for action in the directed thematic area and sector, provide guidance and recommendations on appropriate solutions, and identify appropriate actors to implement such solutions.
