Promoting Clean Cooking in Arua City

From April 21st to 25th, 2025, the National Renewable Energy Platform (NREP), in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), the Uganda National Alliance on Clean Cooking (UNACC) and with support from the UK government’s Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) program, launched a Behavioural Change Communication for Electric Cooking (BCCeC) outreach campaign in Arua City. The primary goal of this initiative was to raise awareness, drive acceptance, and accelerate the adoption of electric cooking technologies, contributing to healthier communities and environmental preservation.

The event was opened officially by Hon. Afeti Joseph, Deputy Mayor of Arua City – Ayivu Division, highlighted that the expansion of electricity access across Arua presents a transformative opportunity to shift households toward clean and efficient cooking solutions, unlocking pathways for improved health, environmental sustainability, and economic prosperity.

Key Challenges & Lessons Learned

Key Challenges
  • High Poverty Levels: Many residents cannot afford modern cooking appliances.
  • Limited Electricity Access and Reliability: Frequent outages and gaps in grid connectivity hinder adoption.
  • High Appliance Costs: EPCs and other clean cooking devices remain out of financial reach for many.
  • Limited Local Access to Appliances: Few distribution centers exist within Arua City.
  • Low Awareness Levels: Misconceptions about electric cooking technologies persist.
Lessons Learned
  • Community-based solutions, such as partnering with Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs), and introduction of subsidies could boost affordability and access.
  • Expanding public sensitization campaigns is critical to correct myths and educate the public about the health and environmental benefits of clean cooking.
  • Strengthened multi-sectoral collaboration between government, private sector, and communities is essential for sustainable impact.

Conclusion

The Arua City BCCeC outreach campaign was successful in creating momentum for clean cooking adoption. However, for lasting impact, the government and stakeholders must address affordability, electricity reliability, and appliance accessibility challenges. Strengthened partnerships, continuous education, and community empowerment will be key to building a cleaner, healthier future for Arua and beyond.
