Strengthening Uganda’s Agri-Energy Ecosystem for
a Resilient Future

AGRI-ENERGY

Agri-energy incorporates the use of sustainable and appropriate energy systems to support and enhance agricultural activities across the agricultural value chain.

It incorporates energy applications for crop and livestock production, including irrigation, mechanization, processing, storage, cooling and distribution, using technologies such as solar power, agrivoltaics, bioenergy, mini-grids and efficient electrical systems, particularly in rural and off-grid areas.

WHY AGRI-ENERGY?

Modern agriculture, whether crop or livestock, depends on reliable energy to be productive and competitive. It enables farmers and agribusinesses to improve efficiency, reduce losses and add value through processing and cold storage.

Agri-energy enables farmers to improve productivity and the quality of production, supports diversification and increased income, reduces drudgery and improves livelihoods.

 

AGRI-ENERGY IMPACT IN UGANDA

The agri-energy nexus in Uganda links sustainable energy access with productive agricultural activities to support rural development and economic growth. Energy solutions such as solar irrigation, cold storage and crop drying address limited electricity access about 57% nationally and far lower in rural areas and climate vulnerability. Agri-Energy increases energy use by up to 38%, raise farm and agribusiness incomes by around 68%, and reduce post-harvest losses by about 30%, while extending product shelf life by up to 50%. These outcomes strengthen productivity, market participation and resilient rural livelihoods.
