Empowering Cleaner, Safer, and More Sustainable Cooking Practices

With funding from UK Aid through the British High Commission in Uganda, the Electric Cooking Scale and Support Programme is set to revolutionize the way Ugandans cook. This 18-month initiative, implemented in partnership with Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS), the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), ICLEI Africa, and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), aims to accelerate the adoption of electric cooking (eCooking) technologies.

Key Workstreams of the Programme

The programme is structured around several interconnected workstreams to address barriers to eCooking adoption and foster a clean cooking culture in Uganda:

eCooking in Institutions

With support provided to 100 schools across Uganda, this workstream aims to transition institutional cooking practices to electric alternatives. A comprehensive toolkit will be developed to streamline data collection, monitor progress, and assess the effectiveness of these transitions.

eCooking Appliances Aggregator

We bring the right people together to challenge established thinking and drive transform in 2020

eCooking Appliance Standards & Labelling

In collaboration with the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) and MEMD, this workstream will establish quality standards and testing methods for eCooking appliances. A labelling system will also be developed to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions.

Repair & Maintenance of eCooking Appliances

To enhance after-sales service, a network of trained technicians will be established. An eCooking appliance repair training course will be rolled out to upskill existing electrical technicians, creating a reliable and accessible support system for users.

Strengthening Institutional Clean Cooking Frameworks

GGGI will assist MEMD in creating a Clean Cooking Unit (CCU) to facilitate Uganda’s transition to universal clean cooking. The CCU will support the alignment of policy, supply chain dynamics, and end-user needs to achieve transformational results.

Increasing Clean Cooking in Informal Settlements

The ENACT project, previously piloted in Kampala, will be expanded to other informal settlements within the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA). This initiative focuses on enhancing collaboration between public and private sectors to provide clean and affordable energy solutions to urban poor communities.

eCooking National Awareness Raising Campaign

Led by the National Renewable Energy Platform (NREP) in collaboration with key stakeholders, this behavior change campaign focuses on promoting the adoption of eCooking solutions.

Why eCooking Matters

The transition to eCooking is about more than convenience—it is a transformative step toward improving public health, reducing deforestation, and achieving Uganda's clean energy goals. By addressing supply chain gaps, raising awareness, and creating support systems for consumers, the program is setting a new standard for sustainable cooking in Uganda.
