The National Renewable Energy Platform (NREP) is a tri-partite organization whose core is the Government, Development Partners and the Private Sector. The NREP has a Secretariat headed by a coordinator and supported by a lean but effective team. The secretariat is responsible for organizing, coordinating and implementing the platform activities.
The Secretariat reports to the major governance organ, which is the NREP Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees is responsible for oversight and steering of the NREP in the direction to achieve its objectives. The Board consists of reputable, experienced, competent and knowledgeable key stakeholders in Uganda’s Renewable Energy Sub-sector. It is also a multi-functional organ, incorporating different professionals including Government, Development Partners, Private Sector & Civil Society Organizations.
An inaugural meeting of the Board was held on was held on 12th December, 2024 at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala. The meeting constituted and inaugurated the Board; adopted the NREP constitution; Reviewed strategic governance documents of the Board, and discussed long-term strategies for growth, sustainability, and mission achievement of the NREP at a strategic level.
The Board consists of Eight (8) members who are listed below:
- The Board Chairperson, Ms. Specioza K. Ndagire – Managing Director Emeritus of the Uganda Energy Credit Capitalization Company (UECCC);
- The Vice Chairperson, Dr. Eng. Frank Sebbowa – Executive Director Emeritus, Uganda Investment Authority (UIA);
- The General Secretary, Eng. Elizabeth Kaijuka Okwenje – Ag. Assistant Commissioner, Renewable Energy Department (RED);
- The Treasurer, Hon. Shartsi Musherure – A Member of Parliament, Uganda;
- The Vice Treasurer, Mr. Julius Magala – Energy Access Coordinator, United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF).
- Member – Mr. Richard Kimbowa, Chairperson of the Renewable Energy Civil Society Organisations Network – Uganda; and
- Member – Ms. Ruth Komuntale – the Managing Director, ECOCA East Africa.
In her remarks, the newly constituted chairperson of the NREP Board of Trustees, Ms. Specioza K. Ndagire thanked the Ministry and stakeholders for entrusting her with the leadership of the Board and pledged to serve the country at large with diligence and professionalism.
Lastly, in recognition of the Ministry’s pivotal role in creating an enabling environment, sector coordination and resource mobilization, the office of the Permanent Secretary/MEMD was nominated and endorsed as the Patron of NREP.
The meeting agreed to adopt the NREP Strategic Plan, NREP operational manual and Organizational Policies.
